From the President
September 2008
Dear Students, Tutors & Friends:
We are off and running on another new school year – our 44 th. The Laubach Center is again humming with activity.
Many deserve our thanks for providing the infrastructure that makes it possible for our students, tutors and staff to do the heavy lifting. We do not receive any government or United Way funds, but individuals, foundations and local businesses have generously supported our efforts.
Among others who deserve special thanks are the Flanners – Mary, John, Anne, Patricia, Bridget, Tim, Therese and Kathleen. Their father, Joe Flanner, was a long-time tutor at LSW who enlisted several foursomes of his golfing buddies to join him as tutors at LSW. Following Joe’s death in 1992, his golfing buddies--the EGGS (Elm Grove Golf Society)--organized an annual golf outing to celebrate Joe’s legacy and spirit and to benefit LSW. Helen Flanner and her children –the Flan Clan—have continued the outing. Over 16 years, this event has raised $130,000 to support our literacy center. The 2008 outing, held on August 18 th at New Berlin Hills Golf Course, was another success, and we thank the Flanners for all they have done so generously over the years for LSW.
Obviously, there are many, many others who deserve our thanks. If you would like to know who makes LSW possible from a financial perspective, ask for a copy of our annual report the next time you are in the Center.
As I walked through a busy Center earlier this week, I was, as always, inspired – by the courage and determination of our students, as well as the generosity and dedication of our tutors. It is an honor to be part of an organization like LSW, and I look forward to what we will achieve together during this, our 44 th year. Thanks to all for their varied and generous contributions to LSW.
Also, welcome to new board members Grace LoCoco, Dan Madigan and Leonard Peace. We are happy to have you aboard.
Sincerely,
| John F. Gaebler | |

P.S. Do you know of a group – for instance a church group, a book club, a civic organization – at which Barbara Felix, our Executive Director, and/or Nick Lyons, our Outreach Coordinator, can make a presentation? There is always so much more work for us to do. Although we have hundreds of generous tutors, we can always use more. If you are familiar with any group at which we might profitably make a presentation, please bring it to the attention of Barb and/or Nick. Thanks.
